Hier ein kleiner höchst interessanter Bericht:

By Steve Brusatte

According to a team of scientists from Newcastle University in England, fragments of dinosaur protein have been found in ancient dinosaur bones.

In a paper published in the December, 2000 issue of the journal Geology, Dr. Matthew Collins shows how bits of protein have survived in fossilized dinosaur bones. In his paper, Collins writes that the minerals in bone served as a preservative for the protein, allowing the protein molecules to degrade much more slowly than predicated by lab experiments. This proves that proteins are much easier to preserve than previously thought, which may open up a new field of research for scientists.

Proteins are one of the four general categories of biological molecules. Several of the most important substances in the bodies of organisms, including humans are composed of protein. Examples include hair, skin, fingernails, and muscles. Proteins are composed of long strands of what scientists call amino acids. These amino acids, in turn, combine to form DNA codes - the genetic foundation for all life. According to Collins, the proteins found may give insights into the DNA of dinosaurs, and may even make it possible for scientists to find the evolutionary connection between dinosaurs and birds.

Further study on the proteins of dinosaurs will likely be encouraged by Collins' study.
